Dr Oliver Wilkinson
My research focuses on the social and cultural history of the First World War with specific attention paid to the experiences of captured British servicemen in Germany during the conflict. I am developing this research to also investigate the experiences of captivity in Britain as well as progressing my doctoral thesis to study the memory of the First World War in Britain through the experiences of returning servicemen (like ex-POWs) whose service did not easily fit with the dominant and mythologised narratives constructed about the war in its aftermath. I am also currently working on patterns of further education in the North West during the First World War, exploring the social and cultural attitudes these may indicate.
I have published on the form and function of letters during the First World War, on troop magazines and on war grief. I have also worked on a collaborative First World War project with a school in the North West. I am currently preparing a monograph on the experiences of British POWs in Germany (1914-19).
